Lancaster native Barry Pearl dived back into "The Producers" on
Broadway last week. He will be returning for another round of covering
ensemble roles there April 1-12. Pearl, who honed his skills in local
community theater and played Doody in the film "Grease," was
previously in the first national tour of Mel Brooks' Tony-winning musical.
While touring in "The Producers," Pearl was summoned to Broadway to
cover ensemble roles for the first time at the Jan. 12 matinée
performance.
"The ensemble roles are broken into tracks," Pearl explained by phone
"On tour, I was covering Track 7, which includes about 12 roles. When I
got to New York, I discovered that their Track 7 was actually Tracks 7
AND 8! So I had to go on in those Track 8 parts cold. But we pulled it off,"
he said. Pearl was back on stage in ensemble roles last
Wednesday-Friday, and in April he will be covering the roles of the Bum,
Mr. Marks, Kevin, Old Lady, Jason Green, Gunter, Bavarian, Stalin, Storm
trooper Rolf, Sgt. O'Brien and the Trustee.
"I have been told I will actually go on at least four times and, at the same
time, I'll be covering the role of Franz (the German author), and they said
there's a 50-50 chance that I'll get to do that role as well," Pearl said.
The "Producers" cast is undergoing many substitutions now because a
number of players from its tour and Broadway cast are in the movie
version, which began filming in February, starring Nathan Lane and
Matthew Broderick, its Broadway originals, Pearl said.
