‘Oliver’ a fun frolic at the Fulton

LANCASTER, Pa. - Oliver! Glorious Oliver!
Thursday’s opening night of the Charles Dickens classic was well-applauded at the Fulton Opera House, and for good
reason.
A large cast of some of the cutest kids and live animals — a real rat (!) and a charming bull terrier playing Bullseye — is
outdone only by a tremendous Fagin, played by Lancaster native Barry Pearl, who nearly pickpockets the show.
With a nose like a claw hammer, this Fagin dispenses in metered doses to his child minions as much compassion as
cruelty.
Creating a cult personality, Pearl really does it up — but just to the edge. Somehow you can’t help but love him as you
leave the theater.

Like any good Dickens tale, there are lots of twists, turns, lessons and colorful hardships along the way. And thank
goodness for that.
Because that is why we get to meet characters like Fagin, the leader of the pickpocket boys. Lancaster is fortunate
that actor and county native Barry Pearl regularly leaves his home in California to return here to act in local
productions. He is a delight in this show, from the moment he tosses out one of my favorite lines (“Shut up and
drink your gin!” he tells one little lad). Pearl teases out the complex nuances in Fagin’s character, making him a
conniving thief, a gentle uncle who calls everyone dear, a cold-hearted miser and a worried old man. I did not want
his rendition of “Reviewing the Situation” to end.
